PCI Serial Port

In the vast world of computers, serial port is actually a serial communication interface. This extremely intelligent interface is particularly responsible for expediently transferring one bit in or out at a time. In other words we can say that serial port works exactly in contrast to the parallel port. These beneficial serial ports are mainly used to quickly transfer important data between your personal computer and various useful devices including terminals, peripherals and so on.
PCI stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect. Generally speaking, a PCI Serial Port or simply serial port is nothing but a connection which works with pin based complex connections for connecting various external devices. The most commonly connected devices include monitor and printer. Therefore, if you have any external device that uses a serial port connection, you will have to add a serial port to your personal computer.

PCI Cards and PCI Serial Port

PCI cards are extremely handy in enhancing the personal computer experiences. They can literally help you build your personal computer from a simple machine to a more substantial and multifunctional PC. But you should understand what they are actually used for in order to choose the most appropriate ones for your PC. These are a useful computer hardware which are plugged into the motherboard. Their size is around the size of your billfold and their uses are countless. The most common PCI cards include Ethernet ports, audio (sound) cards, wireless networking, USB ports and video.

Most Commonly Used PCI Card

There are countless types of PCI cards but the wireless internet card is the one which is most commonly used by the users. Nowadays, internet is no more a luxury or fun utility, it has become the most integral part of our everyday life. But with the quick advances in the computer industry, traditional methods are slowly but surely becoming obsolete. Now using a wired broadband service is also losing its worth very quickly. That is why most of the major manufacturers are offering enhanced and improved ways of connecting people with the World Wide Web.
As you can see, most of the latest notebook computers, modern netbooks and even innovative PDAs have a PCI card preinstalled from the manufacturing company. You will hardly see a new laptop without wireless connectivity features built in. But if you have one without it, you need to manually install the exact wireless internet card. These cards can be inserted in to your machine and you can access the internet via the famous internet hotspot. Luckily, these cards are extremely advantageous yet do not put much burden on your purse.

Adding a PCI Serial Port

Let us try to the most basic steps to add a desired serial port to your personal computer.
First disconnect the power cable and all the other peripherals which are already connected. Now, remove the case of your personal computer. Some of the cases have screws while others come with release switches. Depending on the specific type, remove the case carefully. After you have removed the case of your personal computer, try to find a PCI slot which is free on the motherboard.
Now, remove the screws which are right behind the slot on the back of case. When screws are removed the slot will be freed and you can easily slide out the metal cover that covers the of the PCI slot. Firmly hold the desired PCI serial port card and turn its face with gold or silver connection lines towards the PCI slot. Then you should line up edge of the card with the slot so that they perfectly match each other. Be in no doubt that any slits one the edges of the card are exactly face to face with raised lumps on the slot you have already selected. There may be small plastic clips on the sides of the slot, push them outward and push the card and the card will easily slide in. Now release the plastic clips and they will lock the PCI card. The screws that you had removed earlier, should now be replace at the exactly same points as before.
Reconnect all the cablings and connections and restart your PC. You might get a message like new hardware found, in this case you should follow the instructions on the screen. The card might prompt for the required drivers, if it came with a CD, inset it in the tray and install the drivers. Alternately, you can also download the required drivers from the internet.

Working of PCI

Now let us divulge some more technical issues of your PCI Serial port and how it works. It is clearly evident that processing speed, storage capacity and other features of computer have been enhanced many times since their inception. Matching software, which make use of these features, are also introduced into the market every now and then. Most of the people think that it is just their hardware and software which do the job form them, actually they are ignoring an import part; the extremely useful bus. The basic yet most advantageous function of the bus is to act as a channel or path between different components of your personal computer. Without a high speed bus, your computer will only be able to crawl.
The basic idea of the bus is extremely simple. It connects the processor with various other devices attached to your pc. These devices include sound systems, video systems hard disks, memory, and the list goes on and on. For better understanding, let us consider the display section of the personal computer. You get the visual output from your monitor, LCD or laptop screen. However, the actual functions behind the screen are performed by a graphic card. The graphic card is actually a small circuit board which is plugged into the bus. Therefore, the graphic card communicates with the process through the bus. If bus does no function properly you will either get a poor display or no display at all.
